The Embargo Against Cuba is Bad for Business.

The embargo against Cuba has been self-defeating and harmful to US interests. It makes us look petty and foolish in the eyes of the world. I travel in business throughout Latin America and am constantly embarrassed about the embargo.

It is silly to have an embargo against Cuba when we trade with other Communist countries. It is crazy to prohibit travel to Cuba when we can travel almost anywhere else in the world. When we lift the embargo and end travel restrictions, we will have a sane policy that will help the USA and lend a hand to Cuba to become a useful member of the world community of nations.

Our Cuban policy is the most hysterical, ridiculous and outdated of all our foreign policies. Our relationships with all Latin America will be greatly enhanced when we get rid of our obsolete Cuban policies.

I am delighted that the Obama administration has proposed a lifting of the travel ban. That is a good first step. But it is not enough. Let’s normalize relations completely and bring Cuba into the community of nations.

Cuba was a threat in 1962 when the Soviet Union had missiles pointed against us. When the missiles were removed, the threat was gone. We have been engaged in impractical and frantic diplomacy ever since. When President Nixon went to China, he should also have gone to Cuba. Now, let’s hope that President Obama will go to Cuba and make the Western Hemisphere a better place.
